If I had to describe the style of my home I’d call it Mediterranean. It’s an architectural style that falls into a vast category of interior design known as Classic or Traditional. To explore classic or traditional decor is to be faced with a huge interior design category. It incorporates a wide variety of European touches and timeless style. It ranges from country French to rustic farmhouse chic and beyond to Scandinavian.

Many aspects of these interiors appear sophisticated, sumptuous and glamourous. In other words…expensive. But it can, also, be cozy with a warm, lived in look.

Fear not, there are simple, inexpensive touches that can add that richness and elegance. Keep reading for 4 easy ways to increase the classic vibe in your traditional home.

If you have a traditional style home and want to enhance it’s classic details here are some ideas that can be accomplished easily and quickly … and fit into any budget.

  1. Add Cord Covers to Lamps, Chandeliers and Ceiling Fans

It takes only a few seconds to add a cord cover to any ceiling fixture or lamp. The choice of fabrics and colors are endless. I’ve used burlap and various hues of raw silk throughout my home. Pottery Barn, Home Depot and most home decor stores carry cord covers in different lengths. Secure them around exposed wires for an elegant touch and hide those unsightly cords.

2. Combine Antique Porcelains, Plates and Bowls

Traditional homes frequently feature beautiful, hand-painted porcelain or earthenware. Displayed on walls, plate racks or shelves, these unique pieces can be used as your decor or rotated into serving pieces or tablescape for your next dinner party. They’re not only gorgeous, they’re a usable commodity. Interesting and handsomely decorated pieces can be found at antique stores but reasonably priced pieces can be found on eBay or at second-hand stores. Choose pieces for their color or design rather than an investment and the cost is minimal.

3. Embellish Cabinet Tops

If I had my druthers my cabinets would extend to the ceiling. But barring a future remodel, my home contains typical storage and crown molding. Traditional design often places bits of interest atop armoires and cabinets. Used to add color, or items of beauty to catch the eye, it is a direct opposition to the stark, clean look of a modern interior.

4. Incorporate Vintage Pieces and Heirlooms

Traditional style incorporates items of history. What better way to honor yesteryear than to display vintage heirlooms. Sterling baby pieces, keepsakes, bronzed memories from past generations are evident in historical homes.

I’ve written about other ways that you can utilize the beautiful things you own. Here’s a great post on how to display your family photos and art using a display shelf or how to use your cherished family heirlooms.
